jQuery Grid Plugin - jqGrid

Using the sortable feature, I can quite easily reorder the columns by dragging the headers.  This feature works well.

I started adding a feature where the user can drag a header up to drop area to make the grid group by this column. That feature in itself works well by adding draggable to the header th and droppable in a div above the grid.

Unfortunately, putting these two features together doesn't jive.

What I am looking for is a little direction on the best course of action to get these features to work together.  For example should try to roll my own sortable with draggable rather than the mouseclick, mousedrag, etc, should I try to override certain portions of the sortable feature, should I use the same approach for the grouping feature …

Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated.  Thanks.
