Hello Tony,
there are many common problems wrond server response, wrong Content-Type or just other comon errors/exceptions on the server which follows to executing of loadError instead of loadComplete part. The problem is that jqGrid has no standard loadError implementation. New users of jqGrid just copy some simple examples in his code and try "to play" with jqGrid. As the result the users seen just empty grid without any errors.
I see that as the common problem which can be easy solved by introducing default implementation of loadError. In the answers this and this one can find some examples of such implementation. The exact decoding of the server response could be not perfect. It will be enough to decode in any way JSON response and excract body part of HTML response. The results could be shown above the grid inside an additional div.
My suggestion is to add additional jqg_error div which will be direct child of dbox div. One can display errors from implementation of loadError inside the div. In case of the next successful loading the div content could be clear.
I hope that intruduction of the default implementation of loadError will simplify the entrance in jqGrid usage of the new users and make the default simplest implamentation of the grids more rubust.
Best regards
Oleg
