setColProp: loading select values dynamically

I searched the online documenation and the forum but didn't find anything that solved this issue (even though I thought it would be a common issue)

In my grid I have some lengthy lists of select values that need to be retrieved from the database. Is there a "best practice" way of doing this? I tried using the setColProp method but I can't figure out how to pass it a list of values from the database (json).

An example of how to accomplish this would be helpful.
