Hello Tony,
I described the problem and the fix which I suggest in details in the following pull request. One have to extend $.jgrid.search.odata with additional entries like
{ oper:'nu', text:'is null'},{ oper:'nn', text:'is not null'}
My pull request makes the changes in English, German and Russian language files. All other grid.locale-XX.js files from i18n folder need be modified too.
