jQuery Grid Plugin - jqGrid

I'm new to both jQuery and jqGrid, so this is probably a pretty basic question.

Why does this work:

            $("#list").jqGrid({loadComplete: alert('load complete')
                });

but this does not?

            $("#list").jqGrid({loadComplete:
                                   function() {
                                        alert('load complete');
                                   }
                });
