sql command vs. URL to populate jqgrid

(I moved this from the treeGrid forum - it should not have been posted there)
I am not seeing a way to specify a URL (such as getData.php) as the mechanism to retrieve the data. It seems that we are limited to using direct sql statements. Is this correct or am I missing something?
If I am correct, then what is the reason for this limitation (just curious – not complaining!)
