select - header value -1 'Please select'... what are my options?

As per the docs /jqgridwiki/doku.php?id=wiki:common_rules#select I am using a select.

What is the best way to ensure that every select list in all grids in my application have a header key/value of -1 & 'Please select'.

Is there some sort of formatting options or edit options or rules that i need to do?

or do I simply have to insert this into my list on the server side and return to the browser with that as the first option?
