pager missing on first grid presentation

when my grid is first visible, the data is there, but the pager is not presented. When I collapse and expand the grid, the pager is there. Any idea why?

fixed!

when I set the width of the grid such that a horizontal scrollbar was needed, then the pager shows up the first time.
