Invoking addRow from a external button

Hello,

I am trying to call addRow functionality by Clicking a custom button, it adds row to the grid when I enter the content and press enter nothing happens.

This the function invoked by clicking the button.

function egAddNewItem()
       {
           param ={
               rowid:'new_row'
               ,initdata:{}
               ,position:'first'
               ,useDefValues:false
               ,useFormatter:false
               ,addRowParams:{extraparam:{keys:true}}
           }
           masterUnitMeasureGrid.jqGrid('addRow',param);
       }

I went throught the docs,can't seem to figure out. Please help.
