hwo to afterSubmit event

I am trying to use after afterSubmit event to show an alert message ...the server response...but sor some reason....it does not fireup the event....thanks for the feed back....
This is the example of my code....
afterSubmit: function (serverResponse, postdata){
alert(serverResponse.responseText);
}
