jQuery Grid Plugin - jqGrid

I'm using cell edit on a grid, and one of the columns is a checkbox.  The values held in the database is 1='checked', 2='unchecked'.  How can I set the check/uncheck values in the grid? When grid first loads, all checkboxes are checked.  What am i missing?
