jQuery Grid Plugin - jqGrid

In each of my rows there there is a column that is a link which is clickable.  I would like when the user clicks on that link to trigger the modal dialog box form.  I would like the modal form to display some information which is not editable (id like to run my own sql select query here) except for the column in the database which color codes my table.  So only one thing is editable and it does not appear in any of the cells in my grid, it only color codes the rows a certain way depending on its value in the database.  So I need to be able to run my own query in the modal dialog and edit something which i cannot actually declare in the colModel since it does not exist in there.

Should I try to use the jqGrid Form Edit for this or this really not the correct usage?  I don't know if there is some way to customize the information that gets brought up in the form instead of only being able to declare editable items in the colModel.
