I am a total noob using jqgrid for PHP. Strigglung to get this working...

I just want to add a colorbox link to make  modal window for editing. I worked out how to make the link using a formatter, but then I discovered that jqgrid somehow consumes the click. So I got onto the idea of needitng to do this as per this post:

http://www.trirand.com/blog/?p.....38;ret=all

That makes sense to me. But I couldn't get gridComplete working. To eliminate as many possibilities I am inserting the (document).ready into one of the examples provided in the download :

<?php
require_once '../../../tabs.php';
?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html>
  <head>
    <title>jqGrid PHP Demo</title>
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" href="../../../themes/redmond/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom.css" />
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" href="../../../themes/ui.jqgrid.css" />
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" href="../../../themes/ui.multiselect.css" />
    <style type="text">
        html, body {
        margin: 0;            /* Remove body margin/padding */
        padding: 0;
        overflow: hidden;    /* Remove scroll bars on browser window */
        font-size: 75%;
        }
    </style>
    <script src="../../../js/jquery.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <script src="../../../js/i18n/grid.locale-en.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript">
    $.jgrid.no_legacy_api = true;
    $.jgrid.useJSON = true;
    </script>
    <script src="../../../js/jquery.jqGrid.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <script src="../../../js/jquery-ui-1.7.2.custom.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function(){
        jQuery("#grid").jqGrid({
        gridComplete: function() {
            alert('I am working');
        }
        }) ;
        });

</script>

  </head>
  <body>
      <div>
          <?php include ("grid.php");?>
      </div>
      <br/>
      <?php tabs(array("grid.php"));?>
   </body>
</html>

Yet it does not work. I have tried many things. Where am I going wrong? How can I debug this?
