Hello,
The documentation wiki says
"When a field is not required, the validation rules do not fire"
Can we seperate the concepts of "required" and "validation"
so that if a vaue is entered in to a field it is ALWAYS validated
based on Edit Rules independent of whether the field is "required"
or not.

This can be achieved just setting the required to false - and this is excatly what you want to do.
