jQuery Grid Plugin - jqGrid

hi there,

I'm having a couple of problems with the server response for delGridRow;

$('#events_table').delGridRow(rowid, {
          url:'/tmp/delete_group.php',
           msg: ' Delete ' + $('#events_table').getRowData(rowid)['gname'] + '?',
             afterSubmit: function(response, postdata) {
                        alert('after submit ' + response );
                         return [true," message"];
              }
  });

first, tho the server-side script runs fine, the item is deleted, and the script runs to the very end;

afterSubmit never fires;

second, I'm not sure what to return from the server: in php just    echo true   or echo false
