Custom Edit and new Modal dialog

I am looking to implement the navigator demo but I need to be able to use ajax to get the contents of the modal since different items in the list have different editable fields (Not all the fields will be displayed in the list either).
I havn't been able to find much info on this so I assume I am searching for the wrong stuff.
