Can't match row width to header

Hi.

If I do the following in CSS, header and row columns align properly:

    table.scroll {    table-layout: fixed; }

If I specify "auto" or "inherit" or nothing at all, then row columns starting from column #2 are slightly wider than the columns in the header. Why?

The reason why I don't want to keep the "fixed" table-layour property is because the whole table then goes slightly beyond the UI TABS div where it is housed.

Please advise.

..the only thing that helps is if I specify "width: anysize" in options. then all columns align perfectly BUT the multiselect column width is too narrow and I can barely see select boxes. other columns are fine.

If you have any table cell paddings or margins set, this will affect the width of the columns of the table but not the headings.  I ran into this on my first grid.
