sortorder seams to be the initial sort order for the whole grid, but the natural sort order is not the same for strings and for numbers.
Should not it be better as an colModel property?
Is it any way to define the initial sortorder column per column?

Sorry , but I do not understand.
Do you mean when we use local data? If we use server side sorting you server should care about this. If you use local data maybe you need to check the option sorttype in the docs.
You can use onSortCol even to meet your needs.
