How can I determine if a Grid and also a Row is editable after the Grid is loaded or a row is selected?

I noticed that in IE8, if you call editRow on a Grid which is read Only(i.e: navigatorEdit and inline edit are both false), you get an error 'Exception Thrown and Not Caught error'. Is this a bug or is there a way I can check first if a Grid and or Row is not editable then I dont need to make that uncessary call which cause the error?

Thanks
