Trying the example.php out - loading everything into an iframe.  I get the error listed above in Firebug when it tries to get the data from my remote mysql server (and yes I can get to this server on the command line).  Any idea what might be causing this. I checked out grid.base.js and it looks fine, esp around line 562.  Even downloaded another copy to make sure...

Try to construct you own grid example -  see documaentation.

well.... that is what I was doing when i ran into the problem.  all i did was change the access user and passwd to access my mysql host....

i did notice when i downloaded the zip package, in jgrid.base.js, the first character is a ; - I fixed that, but can't find the other error that is causing this.

This is not a bug, either broken zip. The ; before every plugin is a common approch of writing plugins. For more info refer to jquery google groups

In the version of jqGrid I am using (3.2rc) line 562 in grid.base.js relates to datatype = jsonstring. If I understand the documentation correctly, this normally refers to data passed as a string and stored as a local var before being used as input to jqGrid; if you are attempting to use data returned directly from your server, I think the datatype should be 'json'. If you are already have datatype=json, then there is a bigger problem, one that I don't understand.

OK I think I understand that.  However, I've tried both json and jsonstring and both produce the same result, as does using a local mysql db (whose error logs show no errors).

I"m stumped and getting discouraged - anyone have any other ideas?

If possible try first to construct the grid whitout frames - i.e simple html

like those in the example page. See what is happen. If all is ok then try

with frames (I do not exclude that there can be a problem with frames).

Please let me known about the results.

Is it possible that this is a permission issue? That is, when you access the database from the command line you are accessing it as you, but when coming from your webserver, it is as some other "user"?
