Returning text strips anything in html tags.  So if the DB has a image path, and I decide to format it to <img src='image_path'> it's impossible to unformat it.

How has anyone else dealt with that?  Simply changed it to html?

If html is sent then the developer can decide to strip it themselves if they want.  I can see absolutely no advantages to sending text.
