Thanks MamaliFrenchi! That did the trick. I don't understand why though. The documentation states that the surl is to be used with custom searching and when using edittype, neither of which i'm doing. So how did you figure that out? Am I looking at old documentation?

I found another post very similar to this but the problem was never resolved. Tony asked to check firebug console. I have done that here as well and nothing is being passed but the data for the main grid content. Not only that but the filtertoolbar doesn't even display a dropdown at least with an undefined string. here is a link to my work in progress here. the jqgrid javascript can be found here.

I can't seem to find any good working examples using searchoptions. everyone seems to be using editoptions. although from my understanding the 2 should work similarly. however the following isn't working for me. the only way i can get the 'select' feature to work properly is by using editoptions and hardcoding in the values just like in the integrated toolbar demo. can anyone explain to me how to use searchoptions properly and the dataUrl property? i have seen a few use the dataUrl and a string variable (listdata.toString()) but i can't seem to get these to work either.
