That did it Steve!   I cannot believe it is just that.  FYI, a grid where  datatype: "local" does not have that problem, even with the align="center" in the table definition.

If anyone has/had the same issue and knows a possible fix please let me know.  In the meantime I will create a sample grid that exhibits the issue.
