the only solution i manged to work out is to write own widget and overwrite the val() function from jquery. Is there a better solution?

I am using the toolbar from jqGrid to filter the data. Unfortunately, now i only have two option - textbox or select. 

However, one of my columns is a date, and as a filter i need to use the date range. Is it possible to override with jquery textbox to use two texboxes that are datepickers?
