I agree, this feature would be nice to have.

I've used the grid for reports and have had requests for headers to span multiple columns of data.

colspan currently is not supported.

About the seconfd you can use the css - look at .ui-jqgrid .ui-jqgrid-htable th and .ui-jqgrid .ui-jqgrid-htable th div
