Are you familiar with Gmail's selectAll functionality? Here is a short post about it:

The selectAll checkbox also functions as a dropdown menu. I think this would be useful in jqGrid especially when working with grouping. For example, the options could be "All", "Group A", "Expanded Groups", etc.

Basically I wanted a way to select only the rows that were in a group that was expanded (not collapsed) and I thought this would be a clean way of achieving it.
