It is useful to have a default sort order without indicating the column explicitly. But if the sort image stays in the other column it is misleading and lookslike a bug. Shouldn't the sort mage be cleared if the grid id sorted on another column even when using the setGridParam instead of setSortOrder.

Not a bug. Look at availabel additional methods in grid.custom.js - there is a method SortGrid. See docs too.

So I am not entirely sure if this is a bug or just something missing in the demo.

In your Set Methods demo, when Set Sort to amount column is selected, even though the grid sorts on the amount the image on the column header indicating the Sort column remains in the Inv No column.
