I can confirm that I had the same problem after upgrading jQuery from 1.7 to 1.9

jQuery 1.9 does support 6, 7, 8, but 2.0 will not.

  • jQuery 1.9 runs on Internet Explorer 6, 7, and 8 (“oldIE”), just like previous versions. Consider it a cleaner, slimmer, modern-API upgrade from jQuery 1.8.
  • jQuery 2.0 will not run on oldIE. As a result of removing several layers of barnacle-encrusted code, it will be both faster and smaller than jQuery 1.9.

    jqGrid currently does not support jQuery 1.9 - 2.0

    1.9 - 2.0 versions of jQuery are major releases where IE 6,7,8 are no more supported and a lot of changed fuctionalitys is present

    Thus we can not do this so quick.

    Please consult what are the changes in the new 1.9 version.

    You will have a lot of problems with other plugins including jQuery UI

    I use Google's hosted version of jQuery, originally configured to use the most current version, now 1.9.  jqGrid 4.4.1 was breaking for me when used in conjunction with jQuery 1.9.  Specifically, calls to b.browser.msie were throwing null reference exceptions.

    By explicitly referencing jQuery 1.8.1, the problems were resolved.
